You’ve probably heard that optimal vitamin D levels are critical for immune health and bone health, but did you know vitamin D also plays a role in hair growth and loss?
A research review found that vitamin D is closely involved in multiple cell signaling pathways of growth and differentiation of hair follicles. Studies have shown an inverse relationship between serum (blood) vitamin D levels and many conditions of hair loss. This means lower serum vitamin D levels correlated with higher occurrences of condition of hair loss.
These are conditions of non-scarring alopecias such as telogen effluvium, androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, and trichotillomania. Alopecia is a disease that develops when the body attacks its own hair follicles (where hair grows from), causing hair loss and patchy baldness anywhere on the body.
Book with any of our Naturopathic Doctors to learn how to test your vitamin D levels, as well as to assess other important factors that may be contributing to your hair loss.
